I don't "get" survival games

There's been an absolute explosion of these games the past 2-3 years. And it seems like every few months another one of these things is coming out.
Player Unknown's Battlegrounds
Fortnite
Subnautica
H1Z1
Ark
DayZ
Rust
the list goes on and on, more are coming too.
On top of that they all seem to be pretty popular (guess most of them are free to play)
They are all over Twitch, seems like at any given time over half of the top 20 games being watched are these survival games.
I just don't get it. They seem more like a whacky side mode not a main game. I find them repetitive as hell. I can see how they'd be fun to blow off steam after playing some real games for awhile, but people play these things for hours on end. They also all seem fundamentally the exact same game with varying gimmicks on top of things. Oh this one has dinosaurs, oh this one has zombies, oh this one is underwater, and so on.
What do people find so appealing about them? Is it just that they are free? Why do we need 200 of them?
Feels like I'm definitely missing something because this has become one of the hottest genres out there and I couldn't be less interested in it.

the multiplayer ones like pubg are just fun as hell shooters
the survival games where u build stuff suck imo, single player ones like the long dark are all about the atmosphere

Some of those don't belong with the others.
Guy who helped DayZ and H1Z1 made his own game, PUBG.
DayZ mod for ARMA 2 was brilliant, DayZ standalone is an EA failure. Rust will be in EA till Steam shuts down, just like DayZ standalone.
Ark literally put out paid DLC while in EA. It's an okay game but business practices are scummy.

Sometimes people find smaller aspects of gameplay more fun than a full game.
When Will Wright was making Raid on Bungeling Bay he decided playing with the level editor was more fun than the actual game. Based off that experience he created SimCity.

Subnautica is nothing like others on the list. It's single player surviving alone in an ocean. It is basically base building survival with a little planetary lore and story.
Survival games aren't for everyone but I love me some subnauctica.
There are almost no underwater games and this one is beautiful. Great game and probably the best early access game in the history of early access games.

Ill provide a legit reply:
The concept of "permadeath" is very thrilling. You dont respawn. Its over. You lose everything. Its GG
The adrenaline rush in sketchy situations is what fuels gamer's mind. They enjoy it and love it

No The Forest?
Rust just exited early access.
The Forest which has a complete story line is ending EA in April.
Both are fun but you need a group to roll with on Rust for Max fun. The Forest is a hoot single or multi. And with the last few updates have really added to the combat. Allowing you to duct tape a flashlight to your bow, gun, or chainsaw.
