Saw this on Bleacher Report. I don't have Twitter, but maybe someone who does has more info?

Unless something has changed...it's not pretty.

LINK

For 2018...6mil in dead money & we save 1mil against the cap.

I'm assuming the NFL didn't give us a break.

Absolutely couldn't believe we signed a serial "wait til a contract year to play" to that contract when Dontari Powe and Benny Logan both signed 1year/8 mil deals....only bad move of off-season, has Loomis and Payton written ALL over it

Fairley earned his money on a prove it deal. I don't think anyone was upset we resigned him. Just pure bad luck with the heart condition

It's not the NFL that decides and as far as I know it's still in arbitration.

This move is just in preparation of upcoming FA in case the arbitration takes longer than expected.

Edit:
And looking at the contract, another $5 mil was about to become guaranteed tomorrow, which we would have had to fight to get back had we not released him today.

except he's proved it for 2 years straight.

the issue is the medical clearance that should have been stopped it earlier.

its okay though, at least its only 6mil of cap space this year we can't get back and nothing more. That puts us about 13mil of dead space (Fairley 6.0, Byrd 4.6, Peterson 1.25 being the big 3 culprit) and 0 at the current moment looking into 2019.

We aren't "losing" $6 mil over what we were already projected at and actually gain $1 mil in space by cutting him.

Just to be clear with the wording. This puts us around $33-34 mil in space iirc.

At least we have a bunch of great rookie contracts that eases the blow. Our last 2 draft classes trumps any team in the league. It could be a hell of a lot worse.

it wasn't bad luck. It was poor diligence on the Saints part.

how do you not have a cardiologist screen a guy with heart problems before you give him $40mil dollars?

Better wording would be 6mil we can't get back since it's already lost.

Either way, it's dead space.

I seriously think we're going to eat some dead money to create more F.A. spending money. Not a large sum, but I think we're going to trim the fat this year.

If the team doctors cleared it, you know the same ones that caught dorenbos', than you assume it's okay.

They also screened him at the time of the contract. For them to catch it a few months later, it's likely an arrhythmia that showed up suddenly.

Yup. Just wanted it to be clear for people trying to follow this that we aren't losing another $6 mil, and are actually saving $1 mil by doing this.

I agree (Fleener alone creates 3.2mil). Also add on possibilities of Strief, Banjo, Kikaha, & Stupar. None of those would surprise me.
