My sister-in-law just signed up as a “distributor”. How does someone fall for this kind of stuff in the age of the internet? And why are so many of them Mormons? My SIL isn’t Mormon, but it seems like a common thing among LDS followers. Is it the fact that Mormons are more likely to be “stay-at-home” moms?

The answer is because Mormons are gullible
Don’t ask me how I know.

I have known several mormons very closely in my life and none of them were gullible idiots in the sense that they would be suckers for pyramid schemes.

Lots of people I know selling it don't even need the money. I know nurses, speech therapists, pharmacists, retail district managers and physician assistants who sell this crap or similar stuff.
Only thing I can think of is they use it as a tax write off. Had a girlfriend who sold cosmetics once and the district leader lady who signed her up told her she can write off car payments, gas, going out to eat, getting hair done, tanning, etc. and basically pay no taxes. Obviously girlfriend didn't do that but I bet there's plenty who do.
So a speech therapist making $80k or whatever could write off all that and only pay taxes on whatever little bit of makeup she sold and then figure expenses in and only be taxed on $50k or whatever of her total salary. Otherwise why beg people to buy stuff when you are doing ok financially?
