Ii don’t play destiny but I thought the general consensus was that the first one sucked and the 2nd was awesome? My roommate has been playing the shite out of 2. I’ve watched him a few times and it looks fun as hell

Not at all.

People did shite on D1 when it first came out. Because it had a lot of things a more casual player would hate.
Short Single player
Non existent story
Grind
Skill Gap in PVP
Best content was gated.
Crazy hype. People like to hate on hyped games.
But the game was really fun for those who liked it and highly addictive. The Taken King also fixed the majority of the problems. And added some, but I won't get into that.

D2 has a major issue in that they catered everything around the casual gamer.
No need to grind loot
No need to grind high light for any reason (PvP or PVE)
Weapons were really dumbed down, especially exotics.
PVP time to kill increased so high that team shooting is a must.
No worthwhile rewards for doing endgame content.
But they did improve the story and the campaign
(Note I have not touched it in 3 months so no idea what has changed.)

I will say this, I did not think D2 was shite, I enjoyed the heck out of it but there is nothing to do once you beat the campaign. Doesn't have the hook from before. But by catering to casuals they killed off the hardcore fans which is what keeps the game popular. Screw up on their part to sale as many copies as they could.

I agree with almost everything you said except that D2 had an improved story.

While D1 had next to nothing in terms of a cohesive story, what we did get was largely dark in tone and fit the grimoire.

D2 could have been written by a 4th grader. It is full of cliche's and just awful characters. I'm surprised they didn't insert a laugh track for the repeated, failed attempts of trying to be funny in the dialog.

So while D2 had a story, that doesn't mean it was an improvement over not having one if it is so awful.

After beating it once, I had to convince myself to beat it two more times for my other builds. It was a chore.

D1 is better than D2 in nearly every imaginable way and D1 was far from a perfect game. But I love(d) it.

D2 stripped away every element that made D1 a fun game and gave us a piece of dry toast with dumber AI, no reason to grind, god awful tokens, and overall just a neutered experience.
