trying to decide which reel and line to pair it with. Should I use a behemoth reel? or is there something better for the price. Thinking im gonna order a 9 foot 8wt rod

For inshore? I have a similar rod that I paired with a Lamson Konic. It has held up well against the salt and doesn't break the bank.

I have a few rods in that neighborhood. Have an orvis, hatch, and Galvan reel and haven’t had a problem with any of them. My Galvan torque “feels” like the best reel for the money but I can only comment on the reels I have. Just stick with a reputable brand large arbor reel and you’ll be fine.

yes, inshore. Also looking at the lamson liquid. Which line is best? fishing delacroix, bass, reds etc

I use Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper line.
Any reels will work really. I have Nautilus and Allen reels.

What's your budget? I have Bauer and Tibor reels. Not sure there is anything better than a Tibor but they're expensive.
I have a bunch of Orvis freshwater reels and would not hesitate to recommend most any of them.

I was thinking about $100 for the reel. Picked up the rod on ebay for $150. So the behemoth and lamson liquid are in that range

Orvis Clearwater is right at $100 as well.
I've been looking at picking up a Behemoth, but haven't seen any reviews that comment on start-up drag inertia. All I read is that the drag is rated for 30lbs. That's pretty awesome but if the drag is clunky at a lower setting then it becomes a lot less appealing.

do I order the 7/8 reel being the rod is 8wt? same thing with line? 8 wt? what else do I need to get started? backing?
Posted on 1/22/18 at 3:04 pm to LEASTBAY
Yes you would order the 7/8 reel for an 8 wt rod. Backing will need to be put on before line. You also want 8 wt line.
Some stores will include backing with purchase of reel, or install it for you for cheap ($5-15).
Items to get started:
Rod
Reel - Backing/Line/Leader
Flies - Maybe 5-6 to get started

You're over thinking this reel situation. Get whichever one you like the best. They are both fine for what you plan on doing and you're not likely to put any of the reels on your list in a situation where they are vulnerable.
$800 fly reels may only be worth $800 a few times in an anglers life, the rest of the time they are just $800 line holders.

I have 2 of these. I've only had them a year, but they have held up to 50+ reds in that time.
Maxcatch Avid Series $62.99 (Yes Im cheap!)

I ordered the behemoth on eBay. Every other store was out of stock. That, some backing and wulff floating line. I have a couple of rolls of seaguar premier fluoro leader that I use on my popping corks. I might try that for leaders.

I am still running Ross gunnisons for inshore fishing from back in the late 1990’s. They are simple and most reds and speckled trout you do not need a huge drag. If you surf fish it is easy to clean the salt and sand out of it.
Best one years ago for surf fishing was Lamson which back in the day were pricey.

If you're just targeting redfish, then don't focus so much on the drag. I'd suggest getting a sealed drag if possible, but if you're just fishing Louisiana waters it's not the worst thing in the world if you don't have one. Just keep your reel clean after use.
As others have said, redfish are not going to test drag or startup inertia in Louisiana. Sticky startup inertia is more of an annoyance than anything else. If you go elsewhere to fish, different story.

I will also be trying for specks if possible, now I need to pick out some flies to start with should I be using larger hooks like 2/0?

I usually throw #1 and #2 for slot reds and 1/0 and 2/0 for bulls. I’ve never targeted specks so can’t comment there.

It's a pain when you're on a flat in the Caribbean and the reel starts to get jerky on during runs.
