How did a pipe upstairs bust? Was it run through an interior wall?

It was going to a bathroom upstairs on a wall that wasn’t insulated. Trust me I was like how in the hell too?

Happened to me, though it wasn't a line to a second story. It was a line to a water heater in the attic. Weather almost exactly like we have now.

I didn't find out until it had run for 9 hours and I came home from work to find 3 inches of water in the entire house. Three rooms of ceiling collapsed. The house had to be gutted and remediated just like a flood except half of the ceilings had to be replaced as well. Tear down to studs and slab and rebuild. $150,000 in insurance payouts and 6 months later I could move back in.

Here's to OP's nightmare being nowhere as bad as that.
