The issue is not just knowledge, but the actual task of being a coach. Working long hours, being on the road recruiting -- does a rich, former NFL player want the headache and responsibility?
Working your way up does not entail just learning your job, but it shows your boss that you are committed to the craft and will put in the work and hours needed.
