Either Orgeron simply doesn't understand how close he is to losing his job, or he knows and he's firing his last bullet with a guy he he thinks is the best...Ensminger.

I'm not sure what's worse. But, neither predict success.

Or, Orgeron is in over his head and is trying to surround himself with friendly faces. The article OP references states that Orgeron has tied his fate at LSU to that of Ensminger as OC, and it is hard to argue with that. The 2018 schedule is brutal, but it doesn't mean LSU can't show offensive improvement. But, if it doesn't or, even worse, if the offense regresses, Orgeron has set himself up for lots of second-guessing and criticism.

Funny part if he could go 6 - 6 next year and will still get a year extension for "stability".
