Maybe in the sense he could help them avoid mistakes, but he's not a creative type just a critic.

For TFA at least, I think he was. Every bit of his criticism of the prequels is not there in the film. Damon Lindelof was the one who made him spread, and Simon Pegg (who is in the movie) is a huge fan as well. He even says at one point that JJ should have directed the prequels, and Disney hires him as the director. JJ has almost certainly seen them. Rian Johnson has admitted to seeing them:
So it will be gravy knowing he will watch the Plinkett Review over the pile of garbage he just gave us.
