The problem is we are constantly spotting teams 10-20 point leads to start the game.
Unless you are Golden State, teams just aren't built to exert the sort of effort it takes to come back from that every night.
So we claw our way back by leaning on our core stars harder than we should, and than by the mid to late fourth quarter everyone is gassed and maybe you have taken back a small lead but in your state of fatigue it is going to be a crapshoot if you have the reserves to get you over the finish line after exerting so much just to get back into the game.
