What a stupid "look at me" punishment from the judge.

Just suspend the dude's hunting license for 5 years and make him pay a nice fine like $5k or something.

Any attorney worth his salt will get this sentence changed.

Yeah, I mean, he already took the guys hunting license.

I have no problem with giving the guy jail time, but every weekend during deer season for 5 years is nonsense. Just give him whatever is appropriate for shooting from a road and poaching, and call it a day.

Novelty punishments like this are ridiculous.

Maybe a $5k fine for this guy was pointless. Maybe he didn't have the ability to pay said fine. Which would only bring more fines and penalties that he couldn't / wouldn't be able to pay back. All just costing the court and taxpayers more money. Or maybe he is loaded and the $5k would just be a drop in the bucket for him.

I don't know anything else about it, but maybe this was less a "look at me" by the judge and he weighed everything and felt this was the best case for future deterrent for this individual.

Also, we don't know if this is the first time this guy has had a run in or not.

You are probably correct though and the sentence will be changed or dropped in lieu of the payment of the estimated fine he will be faced with.

From OP's link:

He faces an estimated fine of $18,050, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife, in addition to five deer hunting season weekends in jail.
