Correct me if I'm wrong but if you are aiming to miss the shot, why not just lay up and hit your next shot from the fairway, avoiding those crazy lies? I'm probably missing the point. If so, I welcome the education.
You're not aiming to miss the shot. You're taking precautions that if you do miss, it will miss even more in the direction of your normal shot, which will be away from the trouble, wherever that may be.
So if you're hitting to a front left pin and the trouble is a front bunker that wraps the left side, then your miss needs to be at worst right, if not long right. Taking your typical shot shape into account (let's say it's a fade), your aim point should be at best the left edge of the green with plenty of club. That way, if you hit it normal (a fade) you should be around the pin or right of it (away from the front left bunker) and long. But if you hit it perfect, at worst you'll be on the green and past the pin. So you've effectively taken any chance of leaving the ball short and left...in the bunker.

Yeah I always like to try to miss to leave myself 80 yard up and downs. Figure if I can miss my target by 80 yards, there’s no way I can’t get up and in

Golf 101. I worked my arse off to hit a straighter ball and fight my fade which sometime I lost control of. Now, I have no clue where it is going with an iron and want my fade back.
