Who makes that decision? The same committee that is currently under fire? Now you're just giving an additional platform for people to bitch about.

You've gone from people bitching about who got left out of the top 4 to people bitching about who got left out of the playoffs due to shifting criteria AND people bitching about which team got the benefit of getting an extra weeks rest.

Your idea could work in some years, but this year is a perfect example of this hypothetical being a complete disaster. You've got three clear cut teams (Clemson/UGA/Oklahoma) and one just on the outside looking in (Alabama). By your measure it's now a three team playoff and all three contenders have almost identical resumes. Who gets the bye and why? There would be chaos for leaving Bama out and then even more chaos for giving one of those teams a bye.
