What value, exactly, did the homoesexual neighbor have? He couldn't sell his artwork, and was trying to hook up with a guy half his age. Sitting around in an apartment with a bunch of cats. I would've reacted the same way towards him in the restaurant if we were having a conversation and then he tried to grab my hand. Creepy old man.

As far as what value the old man had? He was a nice person who cared about people. Was he a perfect person who succeeded financially in life? No. But what you perceive as "value" and what the director perceives as "value" are very different from each other.
