He didn't make the pies - they were shipped in. He was just part of the franchising.

What value, exactly, did the homoesexual neighbor have? He couldn't sell his artwork, and was trying to hook up with a guy half his age. Sitting around in an apartment with a bunch of cats. I would've reacted the same way towards him in the restaurant if we were having a conversation and then he tried to grab my hand. Creepy old man.

Being creeped out by an old man who made a move on you and being a racist homaphobe are two completely different things.

As far as what value the old man had? He was a nice person who cared about people. Was he a perfect person who succeeded financially in life? No. But what you perceive as "value" and what the director perceives as "value" are very different from each other.
