I don't think Grimes is a bad recruiter, it's just the opposite for me as I think he is a good recruiter, I just think he's not a good coach. LSU OLineman are beaten like drums sometimes by opposing teams DLinemen, and their technique just looks awful at times with regards to hand placement and all. When they go up against Bama every season except maybe for this season because Bama was really bad this year by their standards, they are just soundly beaten and manhandled.

You basically put into words my opinion, as it stands now, of Grimes.

Above avg recruiter, IF he has some supervision. If left to his own devices he tends to stray away from the set strategy. Sometimes he sees too many diamonds in the rough and believes too much in his ability to coach them up, because...

...I think he's avg, maybe below avg slightly on teaching fundamentals and technique. Individual development is too slow.

Add to that I sincerely believe he's horrible at doing the "other coaching duties", at top of the list of those duties is getting his squad in the weight room or field in the offseason with set goals and regimes. In short, the offseason seems like it's vacation to him. When you're talking about OL and DL... that's where the season is won.

Grimes is not horrible, not even bad. I think he's far below what we normally need. With the position we're in right now, he's way off from what we need. We're playing catch up and trying to get JUCO and freshmen up to SEC schedule standards. He's not even close to that. If we were maintaining an established pipeline with room for projects and extra time for development, he'd be good for the job. That's not us, not right now.

The fact that Charles and Ingram played as well as they did this year leads me to believe Grimes isn't getting enough credit on development. He's been spotty in this aspect, but he did a damn good job this year considering how much got shuffled from last year. To me the key is getting more bodies ready and having more depth, which then reverts back to recruiting. We have had some attrition and some guys just not develop. He's taken chances on a few projects that hasn't worked out so it has put him in the predicament like this year. Seems like Ed O is huge on getting the trenches won again so that may help.
