Choice of a firearm for home defense is a pretty personal thing but I will recommend a shotgun to most anyone, especially someone new to guns. If you feel my advice is shitty make the counter argument the OP is asking for input.
The reality is the VAST majority of home defense weapons will never be used so the comfort level is the most important issue. People choice of home defense weapons often change drastically over time.
