But it doesnt make sense that they dont matter. They pick the two teams who won their division and play them against each other on a field to determine who is the better team. Why are we using eyeball test over results on the field?

Because ESPN owns the broadcast rights to the CFB playoffs and ESPN loves the dynasty and rematch stuff. They are going to jizz all over themselves with Bama v Clemson 3.0 talk for a month.
