Read Helter Skelter. It was written by the prosecutor of that case. Basically Manson wanted to start a race war by committing a horrible crime and blaming it on blacks. He thought white people would get so mad they would rise up and start a race war over it.

In the 60's that kind of murder shocked the world. Today, it's common place. Manson died and hell just got a little fuller.
