Senate.gov

they'd need 18 Republican Senators to expel him and they have zero grounds to do so

pretty slippery slope and most Senators probably won;t wanna go down the road that says decades old and unproven accusation are now new grounds for expulsion

as for your question - governor appoints

19 by my count. 48 Dems plus 19 = 67.

DEMs would not vote to expel him - they would cite "adherence to the Constitution" interpretation that suits them.

They would just 'tsk tsk' at the plight of the GOP having 'no better candidate than a child raping holy roller' and that would be the centerpiece of their campaign for 2018 and decades to come.

The GOP must take care of this themselves = BEFORE THE ELECTION

Whatever it takes - do what a DEMOCRAT would do (and have already done in NJ back in 1996) = Delay the election long enough to replace Moore's name with a more electable name.

Yep = I know the GOP griped to high heaven back in '96 when Toricelli's name was simply replaced with Lautenburg - DESPITE IT BEING AGAINST NJ LAW.
