2012 Mettenberger v. 2016 Etling

On paper, Etling has the edge.
People need to get off this guy's back. The guy is literally playing at his max potential. Nobody really "dogged" Mett, as much as we have to Etling. Etling, in my opinion, is a victim of the Miles-O transition, But honestly has performed well. If he wins a few extra games (i.e. Bama, Auburn '16), this guy could have been an LSU legend....

Dude has had multiple games where he didn't complete a pass to a WR. Plus you're comparing apples to oranges. Try comparing their senior seasons. Also try comparing the 2012 Bama game to this Bama game.

Come on man. I’m an Etling fan too (bc of his heart); but the guy just doesn’t have it

Etling had to learn two separate offenses. And given his limited skillset compared to current NFL Qb Mettenberger, you can't say Etling hasn't done pretty well for his situation. Also, re-watch 2013 Bama game, Mett took way too many sacks. Etling is at least mobile enough to not lose 10+ yards each sack. Bottom line, people need to give this guy some credit...

If we had mett this year, we are playoff bound no question
Stats aren't everything

stats don't tell the whole picture here. Mett was playing with a bad offense while we finally have a competent playcaller in Canada. we all could see mett had the arm and potential

Mett wouldn't have done shite against MSU with the way we played on defense.
But yeah, we win the rest of them I think with him.
He doesn't miss a single one of those throws against Bama.

Multiple games? Which one other than Ole Miss? A game where he went 9/13 for 200 yards and 2 TDs, by the way. Oh and a game where we put up 40 points and won by 16.
He's absolutely the reason we lost to Alabama. He was also awful against State, but come on man...He didn't complete a pass to a wr is what you're going to do with to prove he's not good?

On paper, Etling has the edge.
Now compare 2013 Mett, (his 2nd year starting), to 2017 Etling, which is his 2nd year starting

Why are you comparing to 2012 Matt and not 2013?
Posted on 11/13/17 at 11:44 am to helllo_heisman002
Mettenberger wasn't very good in 2012, 2013 was much much better

2012 Mett might. you remember the A&M game where he kept overthrowing deep balls? we had guys running free on them like crazy.
Mett after the bye in 2012 was a lot better though. 2013 Mett was of course

Etling has had 4 offensive coordinators, 4 offenses to learn and 3 head coaches in 5 years. Part of that was voluntary, but still, that's a lot of changes for the young man.
He's just not an elite QB, period. It is what it is.

But what about his second half stats?

Not true.

But honestly has performed well.
He has only played "well" because the coaches have limited his throwing in games. He is managing games, but that's nothing short of great.
Also, what exactly is the point of comparing 2016 Etling to 2012 Mett? Would it not be better to compare 2013 Mett with 2017 Etling, of which Etling could not even hold Mett's jockstrap even if he tried?
It's like how people keep saying Etling is the 4th best QB in the SEC, but I can guarantee you he throws at much lower rates than the other QBs. It's a skewed metric that makes Etling seem much better than he really is.

Etling's problem is that he cannot complete an intermediate pass. It's always either a check down or a bomb to Chark with nothing in between.

Difference being it was Mett's first year and he CLEARLY had a lot of talent, nobody felt like he was going to be the one to hold us back.
Etling clearly is talent limited. Canada has done a GREAT job playing to his strengths and hiding his weaknesses this year so he's been very efficient. The problem is when we've needed plays from the QB - see Alabama and MSU games, we couldn't get them out of Etling really at all. We've limited bad games from Etling otherwise. Those 2 games Etling was just awful, but every other game he posted at least a 140 passer rating which is quite decent. We lost a third game against Troy, but he didn't get to play that whole game, so no telling what happens if he does.

You didn't watch the Arkansas game on Saturday? He connected on a ton of intermediate passes. His problem is he doesn't go through his reads well.
