If he’s announcing himself as “gunny” then he was a gunnery sgt in the marine corp, or pretending to be. Most guys who have seen serious combat don’t really talk about it at all. Most of my military buddies and myself usually just talk about all the funny stories and dumb shite we did during our time in.

That’s been my experience too. I have a friend that was a legit Seal and he doesn’t ever talk about. He’s been out the military for about 15 years because of an injury on a motorcycle accident and you’d never know it unless you knew him from back then.

This. Some things are best to try and forget. My grandson tried to ask me about my service yesterday and I flat out told him I don't talk about some things. He left it at that.
