This could either fantastic or a huge let down.
A series could really flesh out a lot of the detail from the books that are too difficult to fit into a movie with time constraints. Even though the movies are long as hell, there was a crap ton of material left out.
Not all of the material from the Silmarillion would make for good TV. At the very least I'd at least like to see a Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, and even some sort of Sauron/Numenor/last alliance film adaptation one day.

You see, thats my point.
The general public has a certain idea of what LOTR is.
So you either do something different that leaves a bad taste in a lot of mouths, or you end up with something that at best feels like a retread.
