My Dad did this in 1965. He said he would just rent/lease the building out and not deal with the union BS in a manufacturing environment. That building has been leased every year since then. Thanks Dad.

At-will employment benefits these writers as well. If you write a groundbreaking, investigative piece of journalism, you're going to be pursued by publications who will likely pay you more money. You want the freedom to be able to up and leave without worrying about a contract termination.
