Criticism of offense

I see a lot of criticism of the offense on the board.
Currently:
6th in PPG
2nd in YPG
3rd in yards per play
12th in YPR
4th in TO per game
7th in TOP
I doubt we can get a whole lot better than that. Third down percentage is something we can improve on, but could be explained by playing field position in close games with a decent defense.
Is the criticism just recency bias from the rough first half of packers game and the bears game?

Offense needs to be better if we're going to have some post season fun.

If the defense isn't playing like it has, we would probably be 2-5

Does that include defensive TD's? Only the Jags have more defensive TD's than we do (4 to our 3), so that throws things off a bit. It gives us a 2.5PPG boost over teams without a defensive TD.

Yes it does
OP you can keep your stats. If you're not blind you see this team is struggling to score points. The 52 pt game with 21 from the defense skews the stats significantly.
4 out of 7 weeks this offense has really struggled to put points on the board, period.

JAX is listed as 8th with 26.14 ppg so unsure

Tampa should make us look even better after Sunday.
Their defense is dead last in getting off the field on third down.
49% of the time, they allow a first down.

Which games are you referring to?
The packers and bears game would have had a much larger margin of victory minus the untimely turnovers in opposition territory. This again goes back to my argument of recency bias.

We struggled closing out drives against the Vikings, and only scored 20 on the Dolphins (though that is a little more understandable). The offense has sputtered a lot more than in years pass. We were used to seeing touchdowns and now are getting field goals/turnovers.

I view the Miami game a bit differently. Chicago would have been a blowout minus the Ingram fumbles, which didn’t hurt us despite giving the fans a few palpitations.
We are in a turnover rut which has happened almost every season under Payton. We just happen to be winning those games now compared to previous seasons.
Edit: winning those because of the defense.

Third down is the big issue.
I've like what I've seen from the running game (minus the fumbles) the past couple of weeks since Armstead returned.
It seemed like Brees was a lot more careful with the ball this week. He got careless in Green Bay. seemed like he was forcing the issue. Lot more safe this week.
Snead only had 4 snaps this past week. He's gotta get in football shape. I think we'll see more of him this week.
Bottom line I think we have the ability to be a high efficiency offense that takes calculated shots downfield.
There's no one on the roster currently outside of Ginn at times that's a homerun threat. Kamara could be if the play set up right.
But it's working for us right now because the defense is playing stellar.

If you watch the offense so far this year, you'll notice that it simply isn't what it use to be. We aren't the high powered, scary offense of years ago. Now, we're more short passes and a running game that gets good yardage, when we use it. Drew is not what he use to be. He's never had that strong an arm, but he could place the ball where he wants to. Now, it just looks like he isn't able to put the ball where he wants with velocity. He's still accurate at times, but you don't see him slinging the ball between defenders or throwing bombs to receivers in stride.

This.
He is a very important piece in this offense . A reliable slot receiver is worth there weight in gold.

They are playing a type of football we haven’t seen from them.
They have been much more of a running team. I mean, Brees only has 11 TDs in 7 games. That is shocking. However, our point differential is very very good. It’s a style of football that can win in the playoffs.
I do think the offense will get going, and the defense will possibly come back down to earth a little and be middle of the pack.

Tampa will be a big test although Jameis is a bit banged up and will probably be questionable.

The biggest problem with the offense is that they can't convert a third and short to save their lives.
But are somehow really good at converting 3rd and longs. When you can't just run for those short yardage downs consistently its going to bite you eventually.

Reading this out loud to myself is remarkable. And its true.

This. We are god awful at 3rd & Short. Somehow, our 3rd & Long conversion rate is higher than it is for 3rd & short

I personally do not mind the conservative approach to the offense tho. I would definitely like to see more throws down the field, but I am happy with the way we are running the rock and owning the screen game. I think those down field options will open up to us depending on the team we play against. Pretty sure TB is quite susceptible to the deep ball so far this season.

The difference there is on 3rd and short we have been running more and on long situations we give it to brees who has always been a monster at converting long 3rd downs.
