It's certainly not doctrinal for the vast majority of Christian denominations representing the earth's 2 billion or so christians.

Until Ratzinger became Pope, catholic doctrine maintained Adam and Eve were literal people for 2000 years.
Now obviously not all Catholics believe that, but it's safe to assume a decent portion of the 1.2 billion Catholics on Earth do.
And of course, you'll have a tough time finding a western evangelical who doesn't believe the book is on some level a historical account. That's tens of millions more. Many Protestant denominations, such as methodists, also traditionally hold to a historical interpretation.
