For the sake of completeness, it's worth noting that the number of people on food stamps has been falling for the last 5 years. It's a byproduct of our painfully slow Great Recession recovery finally kicking into full gear. 2016 in particular saw drops in claims from that were right in line with what we are seeing this year

I can agree here. Any time the unemployment rate increases, food stamp participants increase.
