Watch Rep. Garret Graves try to make the case.

NOLA article and video

Interesting slant. Do you consider yourself an endangered species?

What happened after the World Wars with the Cajuns (and Germans) being forced to switch their schools to English is frickED.

I blame intermarriage.

Maybe, but nobody cares because they tend to be white and conservative. It's not like they are important, like the Delhi Sands Fly, or something...

The Cajun language and accent are almost gone. When I was growing up in N.I. in the 50s a lot of older folks only spoke French. Codofil tried to reintroduce French in the 70s. But it wasn't Cajun. It was modern day Parisian French.

The accent has gone away due to TV and radio. The idea that Justin Wilson spoke with a Cajun accent is laughable. I can still do an old time Cajun accent to amuse friends. They can't understand anything I say. Then I translate into normal English and repeat the Cajun version slowly and they go 'Oh, yeah, now I understand.'

That and just moving away from the area. Half of my HS friends moved away and lost their accents. Half of them remained in south La. and still have theirs. The ones who moved away married non Cajun girls. The ones who stayed married Cajuns.

I'm not sure why you are being downvoted. It's the truth. There's nobody here under the age of 40 that speaks French. You here more Spanish than French around here these days.

The Cajun accent will probably survive for awhile, with modifications

The Cajun language almost certainly will not
