I just can't help remember when Ole Miss magically started getting stellar recruiting classes in football. And the first instincts of everyone turned out to be true.
Johnny Jones pulled in two top 10 recruiting classes just a few years after LSU won 5 SEC games (combined) in two years. It's all about connections.
Smart is a BR kid.
Reid's girlfriend is on the women's team.
One of LSU's assistants is big in the Florida recruiting scene (Days)
Wade is able to sell a complete program turnover (i.e. immediate playing time) Plus, LSU is only returning two players over 6'6" next season (Kiir and Bigby-Williams). There are a ton of minutes available for incoming front-court players (i.e. Days and Reid)
The ONLY out of nowhere signing is Waters from Connecticut. But that situation was a bit unusual from the get go in that he was a top-50 player who waited so long to sign. Was going to go to Georgetown until they made a coaching change.
As you can see recently, college basketball recruiting is largely about connections (many shady connections). Thus far, Wade has been able to put the right guys in place to get good recruits.

LSU recruiting has always had the potential to land big names. This is not out of the ordinary.
