Down 12% last year, down about 5% on top of that this year, down almost 17% within two years.
You don't add those two up to get the total.

Well, for local market ratings, which is what this thread is discussing, what other cities want to watch dont matter

are people really debating that?
when you chalk it up to a bad matchup or low stakes, that's what you're saying. when you chalk it up to hurricanes and elections, that's what you're saying
but this ends those excuses. i'd like to just skip forward to the part where everyone agrees the quality sucks and the ratings suffer enough to the point the NFL fixes it...but I don't think the NFL will ever fix it.

Maybe I'm confused, but when you chalk it up to a bad matchup, nothing to gain, elections, etc., what you're saying is that consumer interest is waning. People are choosing to do other things with their time.
The only one that is a temporary deal is weather related issues. The rest are just various ways to say consumer interest is declining. Saying it was because of a bad matchup or blaming it on the protest concedes the same point - people aren't watching.

I tend to believe the majority of the people the NFL has lost are the fringe folks who they never really had in the first place. I'm not sure you'll get those people back regardless of the product on the field. People are doing other things with their time, and I'm not really sure how you change that. I believe the protest just sped up the process.

29 teams are down...so it's not an issue of whether the team is good or if the matchup is good or the geography of the teams involved.

Cord cutting actually does hurt the broadcast channels. I would venture to guess that MANY of the people who just say "no more" to cable don't realize that they can still get the network channels for free and even fewer still probably go out and get an antenna, even as cheap and easy as they are now. I think most of those people just hook up the roku/fire tv and are content with netflix/hulu/etc...

no what you're saying is there is a one off event that for that brief moment in time was more interesting or forcibly occupying more of your time. it doesn't represent a change in your attitudes and perception of the NFL...which is what is happening. you're also placing the blame on external events rather than internal decisions made by the NFL that have harmed the brand with consumers
the ratings are going to keep going down next year and the year after because some of the issues are CBA related and the amount of rule changes over a period of 8 years isn't going to be rectified or undone in a short period of time. there's no short term fix, but worse is I doubt the NFL even knows how to fix it.
I would do cartwheels if the nfl managed to fix itself. it's why I enthusiastically cheer their frick ups. i have some hope they'll fix it one day. because i miss football, but that shite isn't football.

you don't think highly of people then.

nfl has problems, and it's not due to external factors outside of their control.

Then why do you care about the NFLs ratings?
I'm confident that the ratings slide will continue until the broadcasting rights are up for negotiation again. they'll get less, but the way they handle PR and "protect the shield" (by outright denial and in some cases, lying) it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to claim it's bigger than the last one

Everyone keeps saying "I just want to watch football"
Then fricking do that. It's right there.
Check your faux outrage at the door and enjoy the game.

ut I do think there is a valid issue regarding police "brutality" or harassment or however you want to phrase it (see the video of the white nurse in Utah being arrested for not drawing an unconscious patients blood w/out a warrant) and that will disproportionately affect blacks and other poor people in part because those groups commit more crime.
But they aren't talking about police brutality. They are protesting police brutality to blacks as if it either only happens to them or disproportionately happens to them. That is the rub. They are full of shite, because it is ludicrous to think it is racially motivated given the stats.
quote:
There is not an epidemic of blacks being killed by police but there are some individual stories of unarmed and or innocent people killed by police that merit attention.
In most cases, they've involved people resisting arrest, but in some you are right, they are tragic. The problem to me is they magically care now because a black person was killed. Had it been a non-black, do you see these players protesting?
quote:
I do think his whole stance is overblown self righteousness and ultimately does more harm to his "cause" than good.'
It is a large reason race relations are getting worse. America didn't magically get more racist over the past decade because a half-black man became president. It was decisions and actions that made things worse from both sides, but only one side gets blamed. It made me embarrassed to be a liberal in all reality. They kept lumping even blatantly obvious cases of self-caused results of death by criminals with legitimate issues of overzealous police brutality. That only made the divide worse rather than closing it.
The NFL makes this all worse by picking a side clearly, and then letting players go out and make comments that "the owners treat them like slaves" or some such nonsense.

You are taking this out of context. Someone said something about it the Dallas-SF game being crappy. Some else said something about ratings being down regional I was pointing out that game is national.
As to your broader point I mostly agree all the factors you listed have hurt the game and can impact ratings. But there could be other factors as well including things you dismiss. For example maybe the election did hurt last year and the protests this year. 2 years still really doesn't tell us a longer term trend.

I’d be open to that idea if we just started having elections last year
People don’t watch cnn on sunday afternoon. The networks run a slew of politically oriented shows on Sunday morning and then it’s football

But that brings back an earlier questions. Did ratings go down in previous Presidential election years? That was the claim and it should be easy to debunk if false.
I don't think it's just that people flip on CNN on Sundays@ instead just maybe that fewer are watching FB for what ever reason I don't know. Again I agree with your points about things that have happened under Godell that hurt the product and has caused more and more people to watch less, I'm just saying there may be external factors as well. It's not mutually exclusive

It’s not cord cutting It’s a lot of things, but the prevalent thing posted on this board all year is that there’s no decline in interest and the ratings are impacted by several external one time events and luck of the draw with teams on national broadcasts The local ratings puts that to bed
it is cord cutting. do people assume that cord cutters are always gonna use an antenna or the official app the game is on free to watch legally? sometimes those streams suck, NFL a lot of times i will pull up an Acestream Link or some shitty Ad covered link just to watch a certain game rather than whatever game is on the directv fox and cbs feeds i get at home.
more and more people are becoming capable of finding and using illegal streams than ever before. i have tons of friends using the fire sticks that they had reprogrammed to watch any movie or live sports

OP seems to assume that when someone cuts the cord they will just turn to the antennae box to watch whatever is on their local CBS/FOX.
I know more people that stream whatever game they want then watch whatever game is over the air. The internet is where most people under 35 get their TV entertainment now.
its crazy that people dont understand this fact.
i would guess 95% that cord cut dont bother hooking up an antennae, you can get any game u want through the internet for free. its not worth 10 minutes to go buy an antennae for them

Kind of a question for all.
How are bars recorded in the ratings?
It seems like going to a bar to watch the game is now as popular as ever
