Factors playing into a potential coaching change.

1. Other SEC schools will be competing for coaching candidates.
- Arkansas will probably fire Bert.
- Tennessee may fire Butch this Sunday after they get crushed for the 11th straight time by Bama.
- Ole Miss is giving Matt Luke a test run, but may not stick with him.
- Missouri...who knows. That whole situation is a dumpster fire.
2. The AD situation is a mess. JJ may or may not be gone before the football season ends. Any prospective coach would be wary of coming in and then having the AD replaced.
3. The new early signing period is from December 20th through the 22nd. If we fire Gus after the IB, on November 26 or so, that would leave less than 1 month to shuffle the coaching staff and have them try to salvage existing recruits, flip other teams' recruits, and seal the deal for undecideds that want to sign early.
4. Existing defensive staff has been excellent. If we change head coaches, does the new guy keep Kevin Steele and his staff around? Even the best defensive players take time to re-learn new systems and terminologies. A 2018 redshirted senior defensive player would have 4 DCs.

All those things are true and make things uncertain for the change.
But one thing we know for sure:
Gus will not change. He may beat Arkansas and TAMU easily. He may miraculously beat UGA or Alabama (not likely).
But no matter what, whether it is 3 weeks from now or next season, we will be in a big game with a chance to win and he'll frick it up. I don't mean make a questionable play call in a big moment. I mean he'll be the guy who stands between the team and winning a big game. Guaranteed.

Only one of those schools is a real threat to a potential Auburn coaching search

I'm hopeful calls have been made to prospective new AD's by now. Jacobs handed President Leath a shite sandwich.

1. We stop shitting the bed against our biggest rivals

1. We are paying Gustav $600k more per season than Arky and UTee, and at least $2 million more than Ole Miss or Mizzou. Maybe those teams will try to outspend us, maybe not.
2. Which is why we should have done something about JJ when the softball stuff first broke. This may be the most problematic factor, as I would think any HC worth his salt would consider that kind of instability as a negative.
3. I don't think we should take this into serious consideration when deciding on the long-term fate of the program.
4. That would be for a new HC to decide.

Auburn would be the top job open. A prospective coach would inherit a top ten roster. This is very attractive to most established coaches.
The AD is a major issue. If he isn't gone by the bye week, we have big problems. I'd like to see Damon Evans brought in. He could do no wrong at uga until he had the slip up with the panties. He knows the south and the SEC but also does NOT have built in ties to the existing GoB network at auburn. If his wife can forgive him, it shouldn't be an issue with employment.

I know everyone wants the hottest new superstar young coach -- but if we are honest, most fail.
For your consideration if Gus loses at Arky or aTm:
We need to have a plan in place with a coach who can start recruiting immediately because of the early signing period. Fire Gus after the loss and hire LES MILES --- We don't even have to pay him a big salary because LSU is still paying him. Don't tell me that he wouldn't like a chance to wreak havoc in the SEC one more time. He is a great recruiter and face for a program. Can probably keep most of the Defensive staff. We can let Garner or Steele be interim and let Les start working on keeping the Dec signees and recruiting.
I just think he could be a stabilizing, respected, NC coach who can get things back on track and be here a few years while we plan succession.
With all the teams that are going to be looking for a HC this year -- not a good time to go after the hottest new thing

So we are the best open job and have the most talent. Not an issue

Meh. We needed a "search committee" to find Gus with Jacobs anyways. Honestly anyone could do today job. Not an issue

Not like we have some can't miss prospects. If they don't sign in December, they cam wait until feb.

That is up to the new coach. But it is the auburn thing to do to suggest keeping certain coaches
