My wife and I wear rash guards or sometimes out 3mm shorty spring suits when snorkling. We often are out for 3-4 hours at a time which in the tropics will cook you and coming in is a pain.
To me, it is like cycling, skiing, and rock climbing with a helmet, people my age grew up doing them without a helmet and eschewed them for a while because they looked "stupid" now most everyone wears helmets for these acticities.

Yeah, I'm the average fat gut male and I wear short sleeve UV / rash guard shirts because 1) I've got nothing anyone wants to see and 2) It takes more lotion to cover my gut and that's time and money. Sunscreen goes on everything uncovered. I have one long sleeve for weather like today.
