But at the opposite end of the spectrum, there have never been so many gyms as there are now.

We have better equipment, access, training / know so much more bout building muscle and sculpting our bodies but as far as our actual health, I think it is debatable... considering 50's foods were largely natural. The introduction of polyunsaturated fats into the US diet was a massive time bomb, now the with mutant, genetically modified food that has taken over our food supply, disease and cancer rates have skyrocketed. We may have better "shape" from sculpting muscles but even then we are probably not in better shape than in the 50's in the big picture. I'd be willing to bet the average active American from the 1950's was healthier in general than most "shape" oriented of us who work out.. environmental stresses, vaccines, and our food supply has introduced thousands of new health risks that didn't exist then. We can live a little longer because medical techniques are greatly superior but our actual quality of life while being kept alive with pharmaceuticals can also be questionable.

But seriously, we need to get our shite together as a society, have some self control, self-respect, and stop stuffing our faces like Roman gluttons with obscene amounts of food. And I don't mean just fast food, even higher end restaurants serve single meal portions that is enough fat for four adults.
