Why doesn't MLS setup quasi-relegation with a FA Cup-esque type playoff approach?

It makes sense why MLS owners are steadfast in their refusal to have a relegation system, they don't want to tank their franchise value after putting in a ton of $ into the team

So why not have the "MLS Playoffs" be somewhat of a FA Cup / Relegation mashup by making teams "qualify" for the playoff, like the NCAAT in basketball

16 Team Playoff

-Top 10 MLS teams qualify automatically
-MLS 11,12,13,14,15,16 participate in knockout games vs
Top 3 USL / Top 3 NASL

-Next year MLS = 16 qualifying teams

There's already the US Open.

USL clubs owned by MLS teams can't participate, plus if teams were relegated based on admittance into the 16 team playoff

Still gives major MLS teams the chance to participate in "playoff money" events

MLS doesn’t punish you for mediocrity or for being shite.

In a closed system they all still get paid.

Which is part of the problem

Owners have no reason to field competitive teams in MLS bc there is no real threat in revenue drop in a different league.

maybe your issue should be with the fan bases that don't drop off if a team starts to lose... Bc they might have a minor league mentality and not give a crap whether a team wins or loses if they have a good time

I don't think we'll have true pro/rel for a while in the US, if ever.

However, I do think we will have quasi-pro/rel in the next 10-15 years, as the USL continues to grow. Eventually there will be more MLS-worthy teams than can be realistically crammed into one functional league. 24 is MLS's current plans, some have said 28 in the future, but at some point it's too much. I think you will eventually see MLS 1 and MLS 2 under the same structure with limited pro/rel. MLS would rather absorb all the great open soccer markets like Cincinnati, Phoenix, Sacramento, etc. than see another competitive league arise to challenge their business.

The current owners of MLS teams would never agree to have their franchises put at risk by relegation, and there would be all kinds of legal problems and contract violations if USSF tried to force that. I think current owners would be on board with limited pro/rel if they could benefit from the expansion fees from new teams coming into the league. I think you would also have to have MLS 1 teams and MLS 2 teams playing each other for fan exposure and a good TV deal for teams in both leagues. Such a system would give teams in MLS 2 a chance at "promotion" and something to strive for, but also not kill MLS 1 teams with an overly harsh relegation that could drive away the fanbase. I like the Mexican system of pro/rel a lot, since it punishes bad performance over time, rather than one year.

We will see. It's a interesting idea, and I think it's far more likely to happen than having MLS actually compete with another league. It would be ridiculous to have a structure like this in any other country, but I can actually see it working well in the US, since there are so many untapped markets. It would basically be one enormous league with two divisions, all competing for the MLS Cup.

This guy outlines his proposal about the things I have discussed above in a YouTube video: MLS Pro/Rel

one reason relegation works in most countries is bc the biggest cities have more than one club almost uniformly...

the owners might be happy with a setup where no New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles team may ever be relegated. The league needs those markets too much for TV revenue, plus it would give the top free agents in the world a reason to play in those cities.

I think the MLS will hit 40 teams before any pro/rel is seriously talked about.

That's where I think the pseudo pro/rel will come in. I'm not saying I want that to happen, but I can actually see it working well in America, if implemented correctly.

I think that's a more realistic projection than actual pro/rel happening anytime soon.

If they had MLS 1/2 leagues that had some graded revenue sharing between the leagues, that would be great.
