My wife wants a Cocker Spaniel puppy. Looking for a female. Buff color preferred. Does anyone know any breeders in or around Baton Rouge. Can't find anything closer than Bossier City.

Find a good breeder. Don't be afraid to spend a $1000 if that is the going rate.
We are on our second Golden. The first was a very sweet female. She lived over 11 years with us before dying of cancer. She was from a one time litter some good people had with their Golden. Daisy cost us $350. We loved that dog and she was awesome in every way except for her health. You look up every medical issue a Golden can have and she had it. We spent tons on treatments ect.
She passed in 2011 and a friend who breeds high caliber show Goldens talked us into one. She cut us a deal and sold us the dog for $750. He was very different from the start. Not only the appearance but the IQ. He is an extremely intelligent good natured dog. He has been healthy as can be and is mayor of our neighborhood. Everyone knows Sawyer.
In the lifecycle of owning a dog the acquisition cost is probably the lowest expense you will have. Go get a high quality dog even if you have to travel far to get it. Trust me... you will be much happier and have a better pet.
Rescue lovers go ahead and bash me.

We've had a cocker for 12 years and just got a Boykin spaniel from Red Creek Kennel in Vancleave, MS. They breed english cockers and Boykins. I highly recommend.

Had a Cocker about 15 years ago. Worst dog I ever had. Not smart also

Hmmm... perhaps it was the owner at fault?

I've had plenty of great dogs. Have a mini Aussie and Border Collie today that are great dogs. Cockers were very popular in the '80s and were over bred. There is a reason you see so few today. Same with Dalmations

My 12 year old cocker is driving me nuts. Dude drinks probably a gallon of water every day, and has peed on the floor almost everyday despite me taking him out routinely. I love cocker spaniels, but they are definitely a stubborn breed. Both the smartest and dumbest dog I've ever had.

Don't they have a lot of ear problems too?

Depends. I've been lucky with mine, but most are prone to ear infections if you don't clean them once a month minimum.

I had an English Cocker Spaniel, and an American one. One lived 13 years the other one is going on her 10th year. They can have eyesight problems. One didn't the other went blind later in life. I've not had much trouble with ear problems. I may have been lucky.
They are faithful dogs. Both of them were pretty smart, and easy to potty train. Heck one of them would hold it all day if I didn't come home for lunch, and would only go outside. I've found it takes them a while warm up to new people.

Purebred will never be a high quality dog. They will always have more health problems on average than a mutt.
Enjoy stapling your dog's eyelids to their skull to get rid of their cherry eye and all the other eye problems.

I am a breeder. Have advertising with instructions for men to bring their women to me.

I am sure you have empirical data to support that statement.
Good breeders are prevented from breeding any animal that suffers from any genetic diseases. We got our dog with a limited registration. We couldn't apply for a full registration until he was 3 and passed a battery of tests to demonstrate he was not carrying any genetic defects. We had him neutered at 9 months, so that's not an issue.
Our first dog was a registered pure bred and did have the issues you are referring to. If you are getting a dog I would recommend getting one for a high caliber breeder. It isn't that much when you consider all the costs that go with a dog.
Good luck with the mutt.
