I’m thinking about heading to GC during Christmas week. Anybody done this? What about just in the winter in general. I’ve been to GC one when I was very young and looking to go back. Any recs?

We went in February or March about 10 years ago and it was really foggy. Couldn't see 20 ft down. Keep that in mind.

Stay on the North Rim longer drive but, greener and less busy, they have some cabins that are quaint and a lodge with restaurants/bar. It is colder on the North side however, I went last July so idk what the temps like in January.

Will likely be snow at the top...even at the South Rim

North Rim will be closed by then. Hotel closes in October and then the park closes in early December or whenever it snows too much on the highway.

Went there the first week of January back in 2011 when Auburn played Oregon. Stayed in Flagstaff and drove up to the south rim two consecutive days. It was cold. Im talking very cold. Winds were in the 30mph area, temps in the 30's as well. About 2 feet of snow on the ground. Everything was beautiful but most things were closed.
There were people hiking down into the canyon but the entire trail looked like ice to me. We basically spent the first day in the car riding around.
On a good note, it is not crowded at all. But I would take a big coat if your planning on venturing away from the car.

North Rim, they don't man it all year. You can hike/camp and stuff into North Rim during that time with permits, but they close the gate in December for vehicle traffic.

Any opportunity for hiking, rafting, camping at South Rim? Or is it too cold for that in December? I would imagine rafting outfits are closed, but not sure about the others.
Is two days enough?

It gets bloody cold in winter....so you'll be rafting with a dry suit on. Definitely not my idea of fun.

You really want to hike down in the canyon onto ice? Cause the trails at the top are gonna be covered in ice/snow.
Bottom of the canyon is usually gonna be around the same temps as in PHX area(which is why you don't want to hike around the bottom of the canyon in the summer unless you enjoy triple digit temps). And in December we can get to 50-60s as our highs and sometimes 20-30s as our lows. Or we can be 60-70s as highs and 50s-60s as low. Just depends.
