By most accounts, Bill was actually a pretty big doofus growing up. The idea of him being this big playa did not really arise until he rose to some legitimate seats of power.

I think, in college, he fancied himself this smart sophisticated guy with political ambitions, who wanted to also shed the idea that he was just a bumpkin from Arkansas (which I'm guessing he carried as a sort of chip on his shoulder in places like Georgetown and Yale Law School). He likely saw Hillary as giving him some sort of "big city" intellectual cred that a typical bimbo wouldn't provide.
