You would be surprised at how many countries are actually not that big in soccer.
I mean, I've grown to love soccer, and it is definitely the most popular sport in the world, but it's the most popular sport in a very clear sense for about 3 of the 10 biggest countries in the world (Brazil, Nigeria, and Russia). Maybe Indonesia can be thrown in there as well, but it's not a clear #1 there by any means.
Its perception as the global sporting behemoth is, probably in no small part, due to the legacy of the British Empire. Ad dollars and eyeballs are so huge for soccer because it's the most popular sport in virtually all of the middle- and upper-income economies (sans the U.S. and a couple of others), but it will be interesting to see how that might change in the next thirty years.
