I need to get some waterproof, cold-weather hunting boots and can't decide between knee high rubber boots (like lacrosse, muck, etc...) or 8" lace-ups (like Danner, Irish Setter, etc...). Mostly for deer hunting in central OK. 1.5 mile walk to the stand, but not actively stalking and multi day backpacking type trips. All I've even worn are uninsulated boots and those don't cut it anymore.

Thoughts?

If you don't have to trek thru standing water, the 8"ers oughta do it, and they are much easier to walk in. If you typically go thru water, then get the knee hi's.

I have muck boots and they aren't worth a piss in cold weather. They are super comfortable and would be good for your walk, but once you settle in to your stand and cool off, those feet will freeze.

I have always loved Lacrosse and they are the benchmark by which all other rubber boots are made, IMO. Having said that I just bought a pair of Irish Setter (made by Danner) Rutmaster 2.0 boots. They were lighter than the Lacrosse. They also came in 1200g thinsulate.

What socks are you wearing? Could be warm from the walk, then cold when you're sitting because your feet are sweating during the walk.

My mucks are awesome. Merino Wool socks and my feet are always warm.

I wear alpaca wool socks so that's not the issue. It's the uninsulated boots that are the issue. I need something with some heat retention. Hunted a couple of times in low 20s and those boots just didn't cut it. I love them March through November, but December and January here aren't made for uninsulated rubber boots.

I have to do the same. Wear wool socks when hunting Greene/Hale County, Al. We never have a definite cold winter

I went with these Danners: Waterproof and Insulated

Just wore them in the store so I can’t speak to how they perform but they were comfortable and easy to walk in.

Irish Setter is made by Red Wing. Danner and Lacrosse are the same company.
