quote:yea but didnt LAWF' assessment say the 42 day season was on track based on poundage as the season went on?
Based on NMFS's stock assessment, a 4 day season would have led to overfishing. The method they use to determine what poundage constitutes a good quota has been the issue for a decade now. They claimed recreational exceeded quota during a 9 day season that averaged 8 foot seas a couple years ago. They dictate what constitutes overfishing based on who is willing to send lawyers to annoy the piss out of them.
I remember reading a report in late August saying only 65% or some number has been caught of the allotment and there were only a handfull of days left.
the NMFS assessment is plain wrong and designed to say the fishery is over fished no matter how long the season is open.

quote:yea we do.
We have an abundance of snapper currently in the gulf and we will continue to have an abundance after this season.
We actually don’t.

if you think it is funny tell me how NOAA's assessment is so different that LAWF's?
I got Creel emalis and texts all season, i talked with interns at the launches asking about our catch all season.
Not one federal agent asked me or anyone i know about what they caught.

NMFS says LDWF counts wrong, LDWF says NMFS counts wrong. Headlines are written, lawsuits are filed, a divided recreational community argues over who has the bigger dick, Buddy Guidon's lawyers cash checks and bend the Feds over in court. Rinse, repeat.

Exactly, every piece of "data" is flawed. Commercial guys stick together, while the rec guys fight amongst each other, which leads to us rec guys getting the short end of the stick. Sadly, its going to be that way for the foreseeable future. But hey atleast we got our extended season this year. We prob wont have a federal season for the next few years.

yup
as long as they don't frick with tuna I don't care. They can let the people with small boats fight over the snapper

that cannot be argued.
Sure it can.

Asking for a friend.
Hell yes! Especially when the Coast Guard and Marine Patrol are sitting out there in a helicopter radaring and spotting boats fishing locations to which they send their "go boats" and check your catch.

By shallow water I mean within the 9 mile depths or "state" waters. But hey what do I know, I'm only out there every weekend.

Snapper season was extended in the gulf dip shite. You know where it is illegal to fish most of the year. We have more snapper out there than we have ever had.

Can’t fish in the gulf within 9 miles, dipshit?

that was the threat anyway. I don't understand your apologetic tone for recreational fishermen. Hell you probably fish as a "charter" anyway.

quote:exactly. the 3 day season this year was funny. On an extremely rough weekend where only big boats could go out. and they claimed the allotment was caught anyway.

There could be a weekend season where a hurricane could come through that they still would claim the allotment would be caught.

Why do my methods of fishing matter. I’m just reporting what I see out there on a regular basis. The snapper are far from endangered, but we don’t have as healthy of a mature population as an abundance of guys seem to think.
