White Animals - Nashville
Drivin n Cying - Atlanta
Jason and the Scorchers - Nashville
Fetching Bones - Chapel Hill
OP said Gulf Coast bands but thinking of some great bands from the South that should have been bigger but never broke out.

Drivin' and Crying got a lot of airplay in Mobile. I thought Jason and the Scorchers were hilarious. Alternative country. Loved "Telling White Lies."

I saw Jason and the Scorchers in College Station around '99 or so. Don't know if they ever stopped touring.
Drivin n Crying actually had a radio hit with Fly Me Courageous. Mainly remember them for a guy across the hall from me in the dorm who would get drunk and play Straight to Hell on repeat.

If they do, then The Connells is the answer to the title question.
