I would think that, if he could get out of the room before they actually got up there, he could walk out into the hallway and just look like any normal guy. In all of the confusion, I could see it. Even once they eventually figured out who he was, he would have been gone.

Police were on the 32nd floor in 12 minutes. No one was going to leave that floor without a lot of scrutiny.

When they pinpointed the location of fire, the building was surrounded and locked down I would assume. No one was leaving the premises. We are talking about a 64yr old man that looks like he was not very well conditioned to be able to make any kind of daring escape. The moment he engaged, it was over for him.
