1997 LSU vs. Florida – 20 years!

Let’s recap this scene because it’s been 20 years. LSU is one week removed from beating Vanderbilt 7-6, Tigers had not beaten the Gators since 1987 (9 game losing streak) and to top it all off the previous year was a 56-13 beatdown (where Jevon Kearse blocked an XP to add to the painful day). Spurrier's team was an empire.
Now the game. Florida came in ranked number 1 and the atmosphere was historic. It’s why Tiger Stadium has the reputation it has. The night had it all Touchdown Tommy Banks, Herb Tyler, Cedric Donaldson, Kevin Faulk, Doug Johnson imploding, Adrian Karsten (RIP), the Visor complaining about every call, and the field being rushed.
In my house I still have a cut out of the front page The Advocate the morning after. It reads “TIGER BAIT” as the field goal posts are about to come crashing down. There’s one guy on the top of the posts. Always wondered who that guy was. So if you are out there – tell us that story of climbing on top of the field goal posts and falling down with it moments after LSU shocked the college football world.
Geaux Tigers!

It was the high water mark of my years as an LSU student from 1995-2000. A week I will forever remember. We partied all Friday night and walked over to the Pmac early the A.M. to get on the front row for Gameday. The day was ours. Too bad we laid an egg against Ole Piss the following week. But even with that said that was an amazing magical night in T.S. I still have the envelope of the grass I took from the field.

Is there a better Link for this EN? you can watch the entire game on youtube, but I would love to see the local reaction to the 97 game. Mike Rhodes the former sports an anchor at WBRZ did a good one as well.

There were 250,000 people in the stadium that night.

This was playing on the radio when I got back to the truck from the stadium
Funny how you can remember insignificant stuff like that.

I've been going to Lsu games my whole life. This game is by far the most fun I had at a game. Beating a team that you never expected going in to it, especially after they laid the wood on us for many years. At least O is setting that up for us again.

Seriously was thinking of the same song. Remember it being played multiple times that day.

I was there and was on the goal post too; just toward the bottom. I was part of the ROTC Color Guard so had to go back to the ROTC building to change before coming back to the game. We were walking back to the stadium when Herb Tyler scored his TD and the sound outside as he stadium erupted was simply insane. We couldn't hear the score that was read out so we had no way of knowing what the score was and assumed the worst that the crowd was just happy we scored at all. Great surprise to finally walk into the stadium and see the 14-0 scoreboard.
