How is this considered bribery? How is it a federal crime to pay a private citizen an incentive to attend/play BB at a university?

I absolutely agree it is an NCAA violation but I do not see this as bribery.


Bribery is the practice of offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting something of value for the purpose of influencing the action of an official in discharge of his/ her public or legal duties. Bribery is a gain to an illicit advantage. Federal statutes refer to two classes of offenses: graft and bribery.

I think they were looking into misuse of federal grant money for the student athletes.

ETA: wire fraud and money laundering.
