Pete Jenkins and recruiting

If I recall correctly, Jenkins was only going to be here for this season. Some feel that Austin Thomas is a stop gap and recruiting in his place. Does anyone else feel that this situation that Orgeron put himself in can be used to negatively recruit against LSU? We need defensive linemen in the worst way and I can’t help but feel other schools are going to be telling recruits that Jenkins is leaving and since they won’t know who their coach is, make it harder for us to close. Thoughts?

I mean sure, anything can be spun negatively, so I'm sure some will try.
But to have a guy like Jenkins coaching you (and he is still here) is a massive positive over a negative.
With that said, having a DL coach recruiting and having Jenkins as off field support, would be good too. I guess I don't see the bad sides when you have been though Brick for how many years - no recruiting, no coaching.
LSU is much better in DL recruiting and coaching department now.

Not being able to have your specific position coach recruit you is a massive negative. There is really no way to spin that. Right now if you are a big D Line target, you are getting phone calls, visits to your games and high schools from different DLine coaches from across the country. These are Coaches you expect to coach you for the next 4 years. These coaches have been building relationships with these recruits for past 2-3 years. Well all but one major school (LSU). LSU landed some targets but also missed on some big Dline targets that year that specifically sited the lack of communication with Jenkins or just having a better relationship with another schools DLine coach. The best combination is to have a DLine coach who is a good coach and a good recruiter. How LSU could have a position coach that cannot physically recruit in such a position of need is one of Coach O's biggest mistakes right now.

Bottom line is that LSU needs to sign a Michael Thompson and a Dorian Gerald in this class and the coming classes. That's the difference in our DL recruiting. These are nasty hard nosed players that LSU is missing and has been for a while. We get them in spurts but LSU needs to roster full of them. Orgeron knows the type of players we need so he needs to go out and get them. What ever that takes just go out and do it. We have the Keys and Chassions now let's go stack our line with the Godcheax's and Lawrence's. We also have some nice NTs of the future, with Alexander, Fehoko, and Shelvin so shore up the DE positions and we'll be back where our DL should be NASTY, and impossible to block. Time to stop talking about it and go get them.

“Those guys are great guys for us,” Orgeron said. “We’re going to evaluate the staff as we go along. I’m happy to have Pete Jenkins. I know he’s going to stay with me another year."
I always took this to mean Pete Jenkins would only be here for 1 year. Not past 2017. Although, he could have meant he would stay for at least another year.

I don't recall Jenkins or O ever saying anything like that
BUT... following the full time hire (at which time A. Thomas was named GM too) Pete was asked to stay on.
So he WAS a stopgap. Then he wasn't.
Pete is a legend in CFB coaching ranks. Austin is a damn good recruiter, and this ain't his first gig if that's what you're thinking. We get the best of both worlds, in a way.
Yes, many recruits are focused on their position coach, not coordinator or HC. And no, Pete can't make those eval and recruiting visits. However, his name works in our favor here; all another coach (such as Aranda) needs to do is get him on the phone during a visit or secure a visit to campus, where Jenkins is at his best.

I couldn't believe a few of the guys on tRant the other day, basically going in dry on Jenkins. Everything from calling him a dinosaur to being too old and senile to coach.
He's a living legend and absolutely elite at what he does, even at 75ish in age. He wrote the book on good Dline play. We are fortunate to have him, and if I were a DL recruit I would automatically have LSU in my top 5 for Jenkins alone.
