I was in the French Immersion program from Kindergarten until 8th grade.I then took 3 more french courses in high school. While I do love the fact that i'm bilingual, and helping preserve the french culture, it has never afforded me any job advancements or opportunities simply because the language is dying here.
I do agree however, that Spanish is such a practical language for people to know at these times, and a Spanish immersion program would greatly benefit our youth.

Took two years of Spanish in high school and four semesters at LSU. When I'm on a job site, I have no idea what the frick these Mexicans are saying. It's really of no use if you're not going to speak Spanish beyond just learning it for the test.

It should be taught at the youngest ages, immersion is the way.
I've got my 3-year-old watching narcos. He keeps saying plata o plumo when he wants something and he doesn't get it.

I took 4 years of French. Two in high school and two at LSU. The classes at LSU taught me basic French, and I got nothing from high school other than hello, numbers and months.
I went on to the DLI and became fluent in Russian reading writing speaking 3+ in 1 year submersion.

Reminds me of this video of a comedian taking Russian in college. I am The Machine

I took Spanish 1 and 2 in high school. I can hear key words enough to sort of make out what's going on in a conversation, but I definitely cannot have a conversation. I've been around Spanish speaking people a lot throughout the years though. My dad's side was from Mexico City, and used to speak it sometimes, and my mom's side are half Islenos. Maybe being exposed as a kid helped.
Chick I'm dating now spent a year and a half in South America, and used to be fluent. She can barely speak any 5 years later.
What works the best will always be immersion and continued interaction
Eta: Being fluent in Spanish is definitely something I'd include on a resume

You can use the Google Translate app if you're in a bind

It would be great if we all knew a second or third language. The problem in LA is we don't have a LEAP test or end of year standardized test for Spanish, and it's not on the ACT.
So therefore, while foreign language is required, it doesn't get nearly the attention or support that it should.
Foreign language education is crap. Immersion schools do a good job... but simply rote translation won't result in any real knowledge.
