A big part of the reason many scientists believe abiogenisis (life from non life) is possible is the assumption that the basic structure of life naturally fits together. Maybe it's a quadruple helix instead of a double helix and maybe it uses different protein, but if life is common in the universe there's probably a good chance the DNA isn't nearly as foreign as you're thinking it'd be.
