ahh, the anonymous internet badass with the namecalling.
i deal with Amazon on a daily basis, selling all sorts of books, including ones that were ranked no 1 in some very popular categories. i've had many conversations with them about their review-removal policy. it is not applied uniformly and in this instance for clear political reasons.

The one-star reviewers need to hit Amazon's GoodReads--that sort of obviates the "verified purchase" issue. or should.

Why not do this for Trump's book ("Great Again") also?
That books is currently at 4.6 stars out of 2,033 reviews. It has 285 1-star reviews with only 32 of those being "verified".... You know good for the goose and all that...

There is not one person crying about this. It was enough of a story to make it to a few news pages and people are having a conversation about it.
In fact, the conversation has evolved into one that could merit it's own thread. How should product sites regulate product reviews?

Amazon has virtually deleted all 1-star reviews of the book, leaving 439 reviews, 3 of which are 1-star.

Besides, with a 512 page book, one day after release, if a person is giving an honest review after reading it, I would expect those to finish first to be the highest raters. That's a lot to read for any book, let alone one that a person doesn't enjoy.
I bet if we check back in a month or so, when the hoopla is gone, we'll see a lower rating with a better distribution throughout and more unverified buyer reviews.

For example, since all reviews right now appear to be from verified buyers, then as long as that is applied uniformly across the board when there are clearly a bunch of fake reviews, then why would anyone have a problem with that?
And looking at their description of review ratings, my guess is that they have access a ton of data that they can identify user behavior and various pattern to identify and weight reviews across items.
I mean if a disproportionate number of unverified buyers who have never bought or even reviewed a single book, start reviewing a book with statistically different reviewing behavior than verified reviewers and typical reviewing behavior, then there is a good chance that those reviews are fake.

You really think they read it?

That is fair, if true. If Amazon's solution was to yank all unverified reviewers to solve a particular problem then it isn't a big deal. However, I'd be interested to see if they went through that process with the political table turned. E.g. a Milo or Coulter book with SJW/antifa types giving sock-puppet neg reviews.
ETA: Dangerous by Milo Y has 50 unverified one star reviews, fyi
22% of reviews of Coulter's latest book are one-star. Didn't see a single verified one as I scrolled through pages of them.

Fun fact, 25% of his total reviews are unverified 5 stars...

Fun, perhaps, relevant to the argument about applying the "verified rule" evenly? Not really.

This situation is like me or navytiger or zztiger starting a thread calling for serious considerations.
10 minutes later, reactionaries post that tl;dr and DV.

Glad i didn't accidentally say relevant fact. But the victim mentality is laughable when you have twice as many unverified 5 star reviews as you do 1 star. It obviously is being applied elsewhere, or do you think liberals have better shite to do than post fake reviews on amazon?

I get my fair share of DV's but don't care. I'm glad this conversation has stretched 4 pages and still going. Salient points from all directions.

quote:And based on the distribution of votes (68% 5-stars; 7% 4-stars; 2% 3-stars; 1% 2-stars; 22% 1-star), the raw data weighted average would be about 3.98.
22% of reviews of Coulter's latest book are one-star. Didn't see a single verified one as I scrolled through pages of them.
Yet, her weighted average is 4.4. Even if the other 78% were 5-stars, it would only be 4.12. To get an average of 4.4, 85% would have to be 5-stars compared to 15% 1-stars.
So clearly the algorithm is not weighting the rankings equally, and in this case, that is understandably) in Coulter's favor.

This may have been mentioned since reviewed this thread, but I just read that Amazon's policy is to "normalize" reviews of autobiographical works, by removing one-star reviews. I'm certain that is not the actual policy. Why would you delete the low-end outliers and leave the 5-stars?
