She doesn't actually claim Orwell's 1984 novel says anything. She simply uses an explanation from the book to explain authoritarianism. She uses an example from 1984 intentionally in order to make people compare, subconsciously, the bad guys to her political opponents.

Not really ground breaking stuff as political opponents have been paralleled with 1984s authoritarian regime almost as much as Hitler's Germany.
Well when one alludes to a book and makes a point based on that allusion I think we can reasonably infer they're claiming that the book supports their point. But agree it's nothing groundbreaking as a leveled attack. It is more applicable, of course, considering the breadth of Trump's scortched Earth campaign against pretty much anyone whose head doesn't stay firmly planted up his arse or who didn't come out of his body.

Yes, I don't disagree. I meant more along the lines she doesn't actually say what the book is about.

She uses an example where the bad guy makes people believe things that aren't real.

She then says "this is exactly like Trump making you not believe the media!! LITERALLY 1984"

Nothing but a dumb pop culture reference to look smart on her part.

She's no more claiming the book is about trusting politicians than she is claiming it's about Trump, which is to say she isn't. She, herself, is claiming the media is the representation of the 5-fingered hand the bad guy (trump) is trying to get us to ignore.

I honestly can't believe a thread analyzing a passage in her book has gone this many pages and I can't believe I typed a post this long about it. frick you, bengal
