That scared me too as a kid. I think it may have been the first movie I ever saw that did NOT have a happy ending where the "heroes" make it. It left me feeling very shocked and depressed. Anything to do with Satanic worship/Hell to this day gives me chills, which is why I still can't watch The Exorcist again. Once was quite enough for me.
