Glad you were never on my boat. You should tip the crew 10% of the cost of your trip.
Most crew members work their asses off. When I was a crew Divemaster on a live aboard, my day started an hour before you got up, and ended several hours after you went to bed. Not only did I run dives and fill tanks, I cleaned the heads, was a deckhand, worked in the engine room, helped in the galley, kept cold fresh water out for folks to drink, and distracted the customers when something went wrong. I worried about all the things that could go wrong while folks were diving, and kept dive lines tight so divers didn't bump their heads going under the boat. I took out the trash and cleaned up the vomit from seasick customers.
When I crewed on a 6 pack boat, I hauled tanks from the shop to the boat, loaded them on the racks before folks arrived early in the morning, and filled up the fresh water rinse. After the day was done, I cleaned the boat and the head, loaded up the tanks to go back to the shop, and had the boat fueled up for the next trip. Oh, and if the engine intake sucked up Sargassum when we were under way, guess who had to go under the boat and clean it out, sometimes in rough seas.
Most people have no idea how hard the dive crew works. I have a white collar job and I crewed on my spare time because I love the sport. It isn't for the money, I assure you.
So treat your crew right.

My 17 yr old asked for a dive trip for graduation present from high school this year instead of a new car for college. Any of you divers out there have experience with live aboard dive excursions? It would just be a 'guys' trip with he and I -- probably looking at doing it over Spring Break. So going over into Asia/Indonesia area is out.
The great part is that it's all about the diving, and you get to see some great spots that you'd never be able to see or enjoy on just a day trip.

I usually tip 15-20%. Usually just the two of us. So, it's not that expensive, and I know how hard the people usually work.

2 tank dives in most destinations I go to run $100 so $5/ tank is exactly 10% and $10 is 20% I don't know why but you insinuate I am a cheap skate even though I am using your math as the lower base line. If I am ever on your boat I guess I will tip 10% instead of 20

What do you use for your main equipment.
BC - Zeagle Stiletto
Regulator - Sherwood Maximus (new one)
Alternate - Genesis Sidekick
Computer - Cressi Leonardo
Gauges - Genesis 3 Gauge Inline
Suitcase and all dive gear that I don't carry on is 25lbs.
What do you use for your main equipment.
BC - Zeagle Stiletto
Regulator - Sherwood Maximus (new one)
Alternate - Genesis Sidekick
Computer - Cressi Leonardo
Gauges - Genesis 3 Gauge Inline

That's awesome! My wife and I still struggle to get our dive bag under 50. Granted, both regulators, both BCs, two sets of fins,et. And then folks like Cayman Airways and Mayan Air further restrict you to 40 lbs sometimes.

We are right at 50 with everything dry and dive lights/regs stored separately. It's worse on the return trip with damp suits.
I usually carry on my regs. I don't trust them getting crushed in baggage.

If you have the option of having a swivel joint on your primary, I HIGHLY recommend it.

I also carry my regulator on in my backpack.
The Maximus swivels vertically allowing you to route the hose under your arm vs over the shoulder and it's nice as you know, this combined with an inline secondary for streamlining and reducing hoses.

I carry regs in carryon. So just fins, etc. and bc, lights, knives, computers.
Full face has much better visibility without the fogging, purging, anti fog bullshite.
We could add coms, but we don't.
